Warning lights

Volkswagen Cluster Warning Lights

Modern vehicles will perform a self-test each time the engine turned on. The warning lights will illuminate for several seconds, and if all systems and sensors work as designed, the lights will turn off.

Most people will immediately notice any warning light that illuminates the instrument panel. Some people will ignore it, however, if you are like me, you will try to find out what happens with your car as soon as possible.

Other warning lights will require immediate attention. Some of them are:

  • Low coolant level or engine Temperature light.
  • Low oil level light
  • Tire pressure light (TPMS)
  • Check engine light.

The Low Coolant Level, Engine Temperature Light. When safe, stop the engine, wait for it to cool down, and then check and complete the coolant level as necessary. If the light stays on, do not drive to avoid damaging the vehicle. Call the nearest Volkswagen dealer or repair facility for help.

Low oil level light. Stop the engine as soon as possible, check the oil level and top it off if necessary. If the light comes on again, take your car to an authorized repair facility, and then inspect the vehicle. Click here to see more information about oil and oil intervals on Volkswagen vehicles.

Tire pressure light (TPMS) Check all the tires, adjust the pressure, or replace the affected tire if necessary. Click here to see how to reset the pressure on VW vehicles

Check engine light. It is a general warning light, and it means that there are one or more problems with the car.

Possible concerns are a loose gas cap, oxygen sensor not working correctly, transmission problems, etc. Most of the time, when the “check engine” light comes on, the car can be driven until you have time to take it to a dealer for inspection.

To prevent any further damage, if the engine light starts flashing; stop driving and tow your vehicle to the nearest authorized Volkswagen Dealership
